7th Grade Reading and Language Arts
We have just finished our Argumentative reading unit, a non-fiction unit in which we explore the art of argument. We studied what makes a strong argument and the many techniques that writers and speakers use to prove their point. Now it is the students' turn to use what they have learned in the Argumentative writing unit, where they will be writing an argumentative research essay on a topic of their choice. We will be going over research techniques, including how to find reliable sources, avoid plagiarism, and use the best possible information to back up our arguments.
8th Grade Reading and Language Arts
We are currently reading Harper Lee's classic and beloved novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. While we are starting out with reading it together in class, as the unit progresses, much of the reading will be done at home in order to prepare for high school English class routines. We will analyze characters, setting, plot devices, themes, symbolism, and other literary elements. We will also discuss stereotypes and racism in America, and evaluate whether or not the novel does an effective job at discussing these.
7th Grade Peace
In the month of March, we are focusing on the virtue of joyfulness- what makes us happy inside and out! We are also discussing peacemaking techniques such as assertive communication to get our point across without being aggressive or timid.
